Ahman Green has Parkinson’s disease. The Green Bay Packers legend announced his diagnosis in an interview with Tyler Dunne of the Go Long podcast and Substack this morning.
Green, just 49 years old, is the Packers’ all-time leading rusher, and he now faces what could be the biggest challenge of his life. Parkinson’s is a degenerative nerve condition with no cure, but with treatment his quality of life could remain high for a long time.
Green is unfortunately just the latest Packers great to face a Parkinson’s
diagnosis. Brett Favre announced he had the disease in 2024, saying he’s battled joint stiffness and muscle weakness, as well as difficulty swallowing, all significant symptoms of the disease.
I don’t think it’s editorializing to say this is terrible news. Green is a legend for a reason, and his 2003 season stands as one of the very best in Packers history. He has a real claim as the best ballcarrier the Packers have ever seen, and we’ll probably never see a Packers player carry the volume of touches he did again. Between rushing attempts and receptions, Green compiled a whopping 405 regular season touches in 2003. To say nothing of the amazing things he did with those opportunities, that’s a rare accomplishment in and of itself — only 45 players in league history have crossed the 400-touch mark in a season, and Green is the only Packers player to do it.
Take a moment to appreciate some of his great moments today, and spare a thought for a guy facing a new and frightening challenge.
