Let’s pretend for a moment all of the current uncomfortable vibes with the new ownership are solved. A new deal to keep the Portland Trail Blazers in town long-term has been reached. Now that Tom Dundon has his money to bring the Moda Center up to modern day, world class standards, lets talk about spending some of that $600 million to make a shrine to the real Trailblazers who’ve laid the foundation for 57 years of NBA basketball in Portland.
While it would be great to get an Avengers-style commemorative
bronze set that had all of the following legends in various poses relative to their fame, remember who is paying for it. We’re only going to get one.
Choose your legend, but choose wisely.
THE FOUNDER: Harry Glickman was the man most passionate about, and most responsible for, bringing NBA Basketball to Portland.
THE MAYOR OF RIP CITY: Legendary Hall of Fame broadcaster, Bill Schonely. The man many say will always be the voice of Blazers Basketball, with his list of Blazerisms still in regular use today. My personal pick.
THE GOOD DOCTOR: Dr. Jack Ramsey not only won a championship, it was his ability to connect and teach that made him revered in the basketball community. And the man was one helluva dresser.
BIG RED: You can’t go wrong with the greatest Blazer of them all, Bill Walton. Throw it DOWN big man! Throw it down!
THE GLIDE: While his ties to the organization have been mostly severed, Clyde Drexler led the greatest three season stretch of Blazers basketball in the franchise’s 57 years.
DAME TIME: The franchise’s leading scorer owns some of the biggest, most dramatic moments in the team’s history. He has also been the most loyal star player in franchise history. Damian Lillard may go down as the most respected player to don the Trail Blazer jersey.
