Wake Forest picked up their 8th win of the season after destroying the Fightin’ Blue Hens 52-14. That marks just the 11th season in program history that Wake will finish with 8+ wins and just the 7th time Wake has won 8 or more games in the regular season.
This game was not close at all, so this will be a bit of a rapid recap. The Deacs set the tone right from their first drive, running right down the field on a 15-play, 76 yard drive that ended in a 1-yard
Demond Claiborne touchdown. They followed that up with a 9-play, 59 yard drive that ended in a Ty Clark III touchdown run, and the game was more or less over at 15-0.
Wake did whatever they wanted on offense all day long, as the Deacs finished the game with 577 total yards. Wake did it both on the ground and through the air, rushing for 263 yards (7.7 ypc) and throwing for 314 yards. The MVP of the day was WR Carlos Hernandez, who caught 5 passes for 197 and 2 touchdown, including a 79 yard touchdown pass at the end of the first half and a 93 yard touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter.
That 93-yard touchdown catch was the longest reception in program history, and Hernandez’s 197 receiving yards are the 3rd most in a game in program history (behind Wayne Baumgardner and John Henry Mills).
The defense continued to play as well as they have all season. Outside of a busted coverage that allowed Delaware to score a touchdown in the 2nd quarter, the Deacs held the Blue Hens in check until the 4th quarter when both teams were playing their 3rd and 4th stringers. Wake held Delaware to just 67 yards rushing on 29 carries (2.7 ypc) and limited Nick Minicucci, the nations 2nd leading passer, to just 140 yards passing. It was just business as usual for one of the best defenses in college football.
With 8 wins in his first season, Jake Dickert is officially the winningest 1st year head coach in program history.
He continues to do an amazing job this year and I think the blowout win over the Blue Hens really shows how much the Deacs have improved since the 10-9 win over Kennesaw in the first game of the season. Wake has just 1 regular season game at Duke next week for a chance to get a 9th win and keep the dream of a 10 win season alive. That was unfathomable just a few months ago.
It was nice to have an easy, stress free win.
Go Deacs!
