In professional sports, it is often difficult to know who deserves credit and blame. In football, the head coach and quarterback get the majority of both with coordinators and other star players earning
the remaining amount. For losing teams, like the Cleveland Browns have been for far too long, it is often assumed by fans and media that everyone is to blame and very little good is happening.
Despite the lack of success in Cleveland, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was hired away to be the GM of the Minnesota Vikings, HC Kevin Stefanski is reportedly well-liked by the NFL, Glenn Cook has been requested to interview for many top jobs and, now, OC Tommy Rees continues to be sought out for head coaching positions, specifically in college.
After North Carolina last year (as well as reported interest from UCLA) and Penn State already this year, Rees is reportedly on the list of candidates to replace Sherrone Moore at the University of Michigan:
It remains to be seen when Michigan will start interviewing in the wake of firing Sherrone Moore on Wednesday.
But Rees would likely take the interview considering he talked to Penn State about its head coach vacancy last week before it went with Matt Campbell.
Rees was also recently noted as a young coach to watch for head coaching jobs in the NFL:
Rees, 33, was well-liked by Mike Vrabel and could have been a potential offensive coordinator candidate in New England this year where, I imagine, our thoughts on his potential as a head coach in the NFL might have been different. While this may be early for Rees, I want to point out that his history of maximizing quarterbacks is undeniable. The Browns have won games with Rees as the primary play-caller, having both Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel under center. As an offensive coordinator at Notre Dame, Rees’s team rewrote the school’s record book with Ian Book under center. Jalen Milroe had his best collegiate season when Rees was Alabama’s offensive coordinator.
Cleveland fans are well aware of how Sanders’ performance could change the course of the franchise. Stefanski’s future with the Browns and Rees’ head coaching candidacy could also be greatly impacted by how the young quarterback plays in the last four games of the season.
Michigan’s program seems to be in a bit of chaos following the Moore departure, with their athletic director also coming under fire. It is possible that the university has to make some bigger decisions before going through the interview and hiring process, but recruiting and the transfer portal timelines are already moving in fast forward, so they will want to be as quick as possible.
