What Makes Boise State Difficult to Play?
The trenches.
What failed Boise State in Tampa a week ago was receiver play, the secondary, and special teams.
For the most part, the Broncos held up well in between the tackles.
On defense, the front four allowed BSU to stay in the fight for longer than they would have otherwise.
South Florida managed just 117 rushing yards.
And Boise State registered four sacks (to USF’s one).
The offensive line gave Maddux Madsen time to throw, but you can only protect for so long.
Following the loss, the analytics showcased that Boise State wasn’t necessarily “outplayed”, but the massive influence of a -3 turnover ratio and mental mishaps (penalties, special teams oversights, etc.) let the dam break loose.
Against Eastern Washington, the size and talent difference in the trenches should pop off the screen.
What Makes Eastern Washington Difficult to Play?
Talent in the backfield.
Point blank, EWU has a lot of youth along the offensive line and their defense was near dead-last in the FCS a year ago.
But where they can pose fits is with senior QB Jared Taylor and Swiss Army Knife senior RB/WR Marceese Yetts.
If Boise State can stifle those two, it is game over for the Eagles.
However, if Boise State allows Yetts – in particular – to find a rhythm and put the EWU offense on his back, it could be a more stressful night on The Blue than it should be.
Despite losing by ten to FCS-ranked Incarnate Word, Eastern Washington did put up 21 points in the second quarter.
Granted, those were the only points they scored all night.
Limit the senior leadership of Taylor and Yetts, and Boise State should find its way to covering the spread.
Who Pulls Out The Win?
It was a shocker to see Boise State get rolled last week by 27 points.
But to lose to an FCS team in the home opener?
No way…no how.
Even during the infamous Avalos years, the Broncos never fell to a “David”.
The last time Boise State lost to an FCS program was in 1997 against Cal State Northridge.
Give me the Broncos to win and to cover the spread that is hovering around 28-29 points.
Petterson’s Prediction: Boise State to Win Outright, Cover, and Take the Under.
