Alex Wilkins was one of the biggest transfer portal additions of the off-season for the Kentucky Wildcats.
Wilkins impressed the college basketball world as a freshman at Furman last season, averaging almost 18 points and 5 assists per game. Now, in Lexington, Kentucky Basketball Coach Mark Pope is expecting greatness from Wilkins… at least glimpses of it.
At SEC Media Days, Pope said he expects some great highs from Wilkins this season while also having some not-so-great moments.
“It’s a process with
him that’s going to be really exciting,” Pope said at Media Day. “I know exactly who he is going to be this season. He’s going to have some games where this is the best player in college basketball, some moments that are head-scratchers. As long as he’s trending into the place that his discipline releases his creativity, we’re working in the right space. All growth takes time, but his ceiling is high.”
The question with Wilkins has been how his production in the Southern Conference would transition to the SEC under the spotlight at Kentucky, but it’s hard to deny the talent Wilkins possesses.
Wilkins showed in that NCAA Tournament game against Connecticut last season that he doesn’t shy away from the big stage and high-level opponents, and hopefully that translates to being at Kentucky this season.
