*sigh* Another week of Lamar Jackson Ankle Watch in Baltimore.
The Ravens badly need their star quarterback back on the field for their upcoming visit to Buffalo, but his high ankle sprain could sideline him for another week. Head coach Jesse Minter was noncommittal about Jackson’s status during his Monday presser, effectively indicating that the ninth-year passer remains day-to-day. His return to practice last Wednesday was an encouraging sign, but he will likely need to be upgrade to full participation
for at least one day this week.
Unfortunately, there is reason to believe that Jackson will miss another week. He revealed last week that he was dealing with a high ankle sprain, an injury that typically takes at least four weeks to heal. The two-time MVP indicated that he can play at less than 100%, but he still has yet to reach his minimum standard to take the field.
Jackson also said that his attempts to play through injuries last year were “dumb, a little bit,” indicating he could take a cautious approach to his return. There are some similarities between his current injury situation and last year’s. Jackson missed three weeks with a hamstring injury, returned to practice in a limited capacity, and did not start the next game, due in part to a short turnaround before a Thursday night matchup the following week. This year, the Ravens are hosting the Jaguars just four days after their trip to Buffalo, which could give the team another reason to rule Jackson out for one more game in the hopes of a strong return in Week 9.
Betting markets, however, have a sunnier outlook of Jackson’s availability in Week 8. The Ravens opened as 3.5-point underdogs against the Bills (via FanDuel Sportsbook), but another Tyler Huntley start would be much more of an uphill battle.
