Tanner West (b. Oct. 22, 2007) is a promising young running back from Katy, Texas, who plans on majoring in finance. I expect him to redshirt* but he could still play some on special teams, if not appear on the depth chart.
West prepped under head coach James Rabe at Jordan (Texas) High School in Fulshear, Texas, where he was viewed as the 46th-best running back nationally in the Class of 2026 by ESPN. He was rated as an athlete by Rivals, which placed him No. 54 in the nation, and is faster than
you would initially think just looking at him.
West picked up honorable mention all-state and first team all-district honors as an all-purpose player following his junior campaign, in addition to second team All-Houston honors from VYPE as an athlete.
A third-team all-district running back and all-purpose player as a sophomore, he totaled 2,511 all-purpose yards and 27 touchdowns during the final three years of his prep career.
West rushed for 694 yards and 10 touchdowns in addition to 534 receiving yards and three scores as a junior, and he had more than 400 yards and four touchdowns — both on the ground and through the air — as a sophomore, while he had 100 kickoff return yards. He had six rushing touchdowns in just four games as injuries hampered his senior season, and also competed in track and soccer as a high schooler.
West committed to and signed with K-State over scholarship offers from Air Force, Arkansas State, Colgate, Dartmouth, Georgia Southern, Harvard, Kansas, Memphis, Navy, New Mexico, North Texas, Pennsylvania, Rice, San Diego State, SMU, Tulsa, UTEP, UTRGV and Yale.
West’s father, Greg, played soccer at Tulsa and his grandfather, John, was a golfer at Tulsa. Both of his brothers, Graiden and Landon, have played baseball at Rice, and Landon is a current catcher for the Owls.
*Keep in mind that starting this season, redshirted players can play in up to nine total games and retain their year of eligibility. If the 5-for-5 rule survives its court challenges, that number goes from nine to “all of them.”
