VAR was supposed to eliminate the biggest mistakes in football. Instead, it often feels like it has simply replaced one type of controversy with another.
Saturday’s World Cup action (especially in England’s 2-1 win over Norway) was another reminder that the technology itself is not necessarily the problem. The people interpreting it remain the biggest variable. Fans watched lengthy reviews, debated subjective decisions, and questioned whether similar incidents were being judged consistently from one match
to the next. That inconsistency is what continues to frustrate supporters more than anything else.
From questionable decisions to ball sensors, the system is on shaky footing. Yet, it is difficult to argue that football should go back to having no video review at all. Before VAR, obvious offside goals stood, handballs went unnoticed, and careers and tournaments could change because of a missed call. Those moments still happen far less frequently thanks to video assistance. In that sense, the system has unquestionably improved the sport.
However, the expectations surrounding VAR have become unrealistic. It was sold as a way to provide clear and obvious corrections. Instead, it has evolved into officials spending several minutes analyzing incidents frame by frame, searching for tiny infractions that many fans would never have noticed in real time. Rather than increasing confidence, those prolonged reviews often create even more skepticism.
Perhaps the biggest issue is transparency. Supporters inside the stadium and those watching at home are rarely given a clear explanation of why a decision was reached. The technology is not going away. The challenge is making VAR faster, more consistent, and more transparent so that it serves the game instead of becoming the story.
After another shaky VAR day at the World Cup on Saturday, have you lost faith in the system, or do you still believe it is ultimately making football fairer despite its growing pains?
