Luis Torrens and David Peterson have been named finalists for the 2025 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, MLB announced Wednesday morning. Three finalists are chosen for the award at each position, with the winners
being announced live on ESPN on Sunday, November 2.
Torrens entered the year as the Mets’ projected backup catcher come May, but he ended up playing 92 games — crossing the award’s threshold for eligible playing time — as Francisco Alvarez continued to battle injuries throughout the season. The bulk of Torrens’ defensive value came from his ability to control the running game, with his 43.2% caught stealing rate ranked second in the majors behind Austin Hedges. While averaging a solid 83.8 mph on his throws, Torrens boasted elite pop times of 1.87 seconds to second base and 1.38 seconds to third base (the latter ranking first in the majors).
After earning his first All-Star selection earlier in the summer, Peterson received his first career Gold Glove nomination in his sixth major league season. Peterson racked up six defensive runs saved in 2025, tied for third in baseball behind fellow ground ball pitchers Max Fried and Logan Webb. Former Met Luis Severino, who was nominated for the National League award last season, earned another nomination this season as a member of the Athletics, matching Peterson’s six defensive runs saved.
Peterson would become the first Mets pitcher to win a Gold Glove Award since Ron Darling in 1989, while Torrens would become the first catcher in franchise history to earn the distinction. Peterson is the first Mets pitcher to be nominated since Severino last season, while Torrens is the first Mets catcher to be nominated since Tomás Nido in 2022. The last Met to win a Gold Glove Award was Juan Lagares in 2014.
