Bayern Munich supporters have every reason to believe this could be the season Vincent Kompany takes the club back to the top of Europe.
That is not simply wishful thinking. Former United States goalkeeper Brad Friedel believes the reigning Bundesliga champions belong in an exclusive group of five clubs with the best chance of winning the Champions League, alongside Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and FC Barcelona.
“It’s early in the season, and injuries or January signings can change things,
but I look at five teams, Arsenal, PSG, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona. It’s hard to look past those five. Man City could be a sixth candidate if Maresca gets the team firing, given the quality of their squad, but I’d be surprised if the winner comes from outside that group,” Friedel told Jackpot City Casino .“I’d be surprised if it’s somebody different.”
There is plenty to like about Friedel’s assessment.
This is not a team hoping everything falls perfectly into place to have a chance. Bayern have the talent, experience and depth to legitimately expect to compete for the trophy. Harry Kane remains one of the world’s most prolific strikers, while Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, and Luis Díaz give Kompany an attacking group capable of hurting any defense in Europe.
The emergence of younger players makes the picture even more exciting. Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof are giving the manager additional options, while the established core provides the experience required for the biggest nights. Of course, Friedel is right that plenty can change. Injuries, form and the January transfer window could reshape the competition. Manchester City also has enough talent to force its way into the conversation.
But Bayern Munich supporters should not apologize for expecting more than a deep run.
After winning a double last season, the next challenge is obvious — prove this team can once again stand above Europe’s best.
Friedel clearly believes they belong in that conversation. And for Bayern Munich, being a contender shouldn’t be the goal.
Winning the Champions League should be.
