The Syracuse Orange women (4-0) are taking defense to heart to start the 25-26 season. Once again the Orange smothered an in-state opponent in the JMA Dome as they knocked off the Wagner Seahawks by a 78-29
margin.
Syracuse jumped all over Wagner from the opening top as they raced out to a 22-4 lead after the first quarter. The Orange used their athleticism to keep the Seahawks offense bottled up throughout the afternoon. Wagner ended up shooting 21% from the field, 1-14 from 3.
The Orange were led by Laila Phelia’s 15 points. Phelia had a perfect shooting performance going 4-4 from the field (2-2 from 3) and 5-5 from the foul line. None of the Syracuse starters played 20 minutes in this game as Felisha Legette-Jack was able to give the bench a lot of run.
With a 43-17 halftime lead, Syracuse once again out-scored Wagner 22-4 in the third and then it was time to give the starters some time watching from the sideline. Sophie Burrows was the only other Syracuse player in double-figures as she had 11 for the game. Every Orange player other than Shy Hawkins scored.
The Orange are back in action on Friday when they face the Utah Utes at Mohegan Sun. That game is at 5:00 and will be televised on FS2.
