No. 15 Syracuse women’s lacrosse extended its winning streak to four games with a 13-3 victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies on Friday night at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Syracuse entered the matchup at 3-3 after a dominant win over California, while Virginia Tech came in 4-3 following a loss to Stanford. The Orange quickly took control of the game, scoring three goals in the opening minutes. Emma Muchnick opened the scoring at the 13:54 mark of the first quarter, and Molly Guzik followed with back-to-back
goals to give Syracuse a 3-0 lead.
Virginia Tech got on the board at 10:52 when Lauren Render scored, but the Orange continued to build their advantage. Caroline Trinkaus added a goal late in the first quarter to give Syracuse a 4-1 lead. Syracuse’s defense, led in part by ACC Defensive Player of the Week Izzy Lahah, helped limit Virginia Tech’s opportunities throughout the night.
The Orange offense remained strong in the second quarter. Guzik completed her third hat trick of the year at the 13:13 mark, and Alexa Vogelman added a free-position goal soon after. Ashlee Volpe later scored off a pass from Guzik, and Guzik capped the half with her fourth goal of the night as Syracuse carried a commanding 8-1 lead into halftime.
Syracuse continued its dominance in the third quarter. Muchnick scored on a power play at the 11:55 mark, followed by goals from Trinkaus and Volpe to extend the lead to 11-1. Virginia Tech managed a late goal from Mia Pozzi before the end of the quarter, but the Orange remained firmly in control.
In the fourth quarter, Ava Peers scored her first goal in an Orange uniform, and her sister Ella Peers added another late goal. Virginia Tech’s Maggie Flanagan scored with 33 seconds remaining on a power play to make the final score 13-3.
Seven different Syracuse players scored in the victory, as the Orange improved to 4-3 on the season with their fourth straight win. Next up, ‘Cuse will head to Evanston, IL for a match against #4 Northwestern on Thursday, March 12 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
