Indiana’s offense exploded for over 500 yards and 47 points on the road at Rutgers, coasting to an easy 47-15 win. The victory is Indiana’s 21st in a row, taking the new-look Hoosiers to 5-0 on the season.
Bryant Haines’ defense got things started tonight for Indiana, forcing a punt on Rutgers’ first drive, stuffing the run game and containing KJ Duff. Mike Shanahan’s offense responded in kind, going 85 yards on eight plays to put Indiana up 7-0.
It was mostly more of the same from there.
On the next
two drives, the defense forced a pair of three and outs, which led to three more Indiana points. The Hoosiers drove the ball well on their second offensive possession, but the Scarlet Knights got to Josh Hoover on third down to force a field goal, making it 10-0 Indiana.
Kicking wound up being one of the weirder stories of the night, as Nico Radicic missed the first extra point attempt of his career, which he followed up with a missed field goal. He’s missed time this year with an injury, so he may not have been healthy, but this is something to keep an eye on for Indiana.
Indiana’s offense responded to being stopped on consecutive third downs with consecutive touchdowns, putting Indiana up 23-0 heading into halftime.
Rutgers’ starting quarterback, Dylan Lonergan, appeared to suffer some kind of injury, replaced AJ Surace for the second half. It was mostly more of the same for Indiana, though. Surace hit Ben Black III and Dyzier Carter for a couple of explosive plays that Indiana’s secondary will want back, but it wasn’t enough to change the course of the game.
Curt Cignetti left the starters in for one more drive after Rutgers’ second touchdown, allowing Josh Hoover to bring the team downfield to make it 44-15, after which the back ups came in to coast to victory. It still wasn’t perfect, per se, but it was a step in the right direction that brings Indiana to 2-0 in Big Ten Play.
