Matt Fannon, who has led the Iowa State soccer program since 2020, announced that 2026 will be his final season before retiring from the coaching profession. Fannon came to Ames following a three-year stint at Bowling Green (2017-2019).
Fannon informed the team of his decision on the morning of July 30.
“After thorough consideration and deliberate discussions with my family, I’ve decided this will be my final season,” Fannon said in a release. “Coaching has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.
I’m incredibly honored to have worked under a great administration here at ISU, and to have learned so much from Jamie [Pollard].”
Fannon’s tenure in Ames has been marked by several significant victories for the Cyclones. In 2022, he led the team to a 3-2 upset of No. 24 Michigan and a 2-1 victory over rival Iowa. The program saw its most successful season under his leadership in 2023, finishing with six wins, including a season-opening stretch where they defeated Arizona and Northern Colorado.
Throughout his six seasons, Fannon secured Big 12 Conference wins against opponents including Baylor, Oklahoma, Kansas, Kansas State and Arizona. In 2025, the Cyclones earned nonconference victories over Creighton, North Dakota and UNI.
Fannon noted that he is looking forward to spending more time with his family in his next chapter.
“I’m grateful for everyone who’s been part of this journey, and I’m excited to make this final season one to remember,” he added.
The Cyclones begin their final season under Fannon on Aug. 12, traveling to face Omaha at 7 p.m.
