Ohio State looks determined to land another quarterback in the 2027 class
If you follow Ohio State recruiting even casually, then you already know Brady Edmunds has long been viewed as the quarterback centerpiece of the Buckeyes’ 2027 class. The highly-rated California prospect — who also has family ties to the program — appeared to give Ohio State little reason to continue searching for another signal caller in the cycle.
Lately, though, the public messaging around the position has started to shift.
Just last week, Ohio State was a finalist for four-star Florida quarterback Champ Monds before he ultimately committed to Notre Dame. More intriguing than losing out on Monds was the simple fact that the Buckeyes were aggressively pursuing another quarterback in the first place. At this point, there are enough examples to suggest Ryan Day is either determined to take two quarterbacks in the 2027 class or is still evaluating whether Edmunds is truly the best long-term fit to lead the cycle.
Thursday brought yet another name to monitor closely.
According to reports, Ohio State has recently begun reaching out to four-star quarterback Trae Taylor, who has been committed to Nebraska since May of last year. Despite Taylor’s longstanding pledge to his home-state program, the Buckeyes appear more than willing to test the waters, confident that their quarterback development history and offensive reputation can make a legitimate impression.
The 247Sports Composite rankings currently list Taylor as the No. 60 player nationally and the fourth-best quarterback in the 2027 class. With nearly 40 offers to his name, it is not difficult to understand why Ohio State would have interest. The noteworthy part is the timing.
Whether Taylor seriously considers reopening things remains to be seen, especially given how long he has been committed to Nebraska. Still, Ohio State’s pursuit alone says plenty about where things stand internally at quarterback recruiting in this cycle. If the Buckeyes can get Taylor to Columbus during the critical summer visit season, this recruitment could become very interesting very quickly.
One thing is becoming increasingly clear: the quarterback situation in Ohio State’s 2027 class is far from settled.
Ohio State offers class of 2028 offensive tackle out of New Jersey
Keeping up with their busy week on the recruiting trail, Ohio State’s coaching staff stayed active with another new offer on Thursday. While making the rounds across the country, the Buckeyes stopped in New Jersey and officially entered the mix for class of 2028 offensive tackle Eytan D’oleo (Camden, New Jersey/Camden).
Already possessing elite size as only a sophomore, the 6-foot-6, 330-pound lineman is beginning to attract major national attention. D’oleo currently holds double-digit scholarship offers from programs including Auburn, Penn State, Rutgers, Wake Forest, and others, but Ohio State becoming involved is arguably the biggest development in his recruitment so far. With the Buckeyes now in the picture, it would not be surprising to see even more national powers follow suit in the coming months.
According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, D’oleo is currently the No. 278 player nationally and the No. 27 offensive tackle in the 2028 recruiting class.
The next step for Ohio State will be getting the talented tackle to Columbus for a visit. While Tyler Bowen continues building momentum with the Buckeyes’ 2027 offensive line efforts, the position coach is already laying groundwork in 2028, and D’oleo is now firmly on the radar as one of the early names to know.
The Garden State sees an additional offer go out on Thursday to a 2028 edge rusher
Making the trip to New Jersey even more productive, Ohio State extended another offer in the Garden State on Thursday, this time to 2028 edge rusher Andre Robinson (Camden, New Jersey/Camden). The second Camden prospect to receive good news from the Buckeyes that day, Robinson now has Ohio State and defensive line coach Larry Johnson officially involved in a recruitment that is quickly gaining national attention.
At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Robinson already possesses the type of frame and athletic upside that top programs covet off the edge. His offer list is nearing 15 schools and includes major programs such as Auburn, Florida, Michigan, Penn State, and others.
According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Robinson is currently the No. 348 player nationally and the No. 35 edge rusher in the 2028 recruiting class.
Defensive end remains one of Ohio State’s most important recruiting priorities every cycle, and the Buckeyes are already building strong momentum in both the 2027 and 2028 classes. Given Ohio State’s track record of defensive line development under Johnson, it is no surprise to see the Buckeyes positioning themselves early for prospects like Robinson and several other top defenders in the class.
Now that an offer is on the table, the next step will be building the relationship between both sides. Should communication continue trending in the right direction, an unofficial visit to Columbus during the summer months feels like a natural possibility as Robinson gets a closer look at everything Ohio State has to offer.
Quick Hits
Perhaps it’s more writing on the wall, or maybe simply Brady Edmunds doing his own due diligence, but Thursday also brought another noteworthy development in Ohio State’s 2027 quarterback situation. UCLA was reportedly in to visit Edmunds, creating plenty of conversation across social media and adding another layer to an already intriguing recruitment.
Whether it means anything substantial right now remains unclear, but the timing certainly stands out given Ohio State’s recent activity with other quarterbacks in the class. Between the Buckeyes pursuing players like Champ Monds and Trae Taylor, and other programs continuing to check in on Edmunds despite his commitment status, it’s obvious that movement around the position is far from finished.
At the very least, it serves as further confirmation that both Ohio State and Edmunds are keeping their options and evaluations active as the recruiting cycle continues to evolve around the most important position in the class.
