It’s rare that any Pittsburgh Steelers coordinators are in talks of getting head coach gigs. Mike Tomlin has never hired an assistant who has gone on to be a head coach in the NFL, but that could change this offseason.
The Tennessee Titans were the first team to fire their head coach, relieving Brian Callahan of his duties earlier this week. While listing candidates to be the next man in charge in Tennessee, Dianna Russini of The Athletic names Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith as one of the top
options.
Along with Smith, Russini named Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, and Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver.
Smith has ties to the Titans, as he was Tennessee’s OC from 2019-20, and first joined the organization in 2011 as a defensive quality control coach. He joined the Steelers in 2024 after being fired by the Atlanta Falcons as their head coach.
Smith has done incredible work since taking over the Steelers’ offense. He currently has Pittsburgh scoring 25 points per game, which ranks 11th in the NFL, and they are eighth in EPA per play. Considering his ties to the Titans, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him get another crack at being a head coach.
