It was attack versus defense from minute one to minute last, though we were made to wait for a while for the Chelsea breakthrough.
That breakthrough would eventually come from the simplest of plays: a nice cross from Malo Gusto putting the ball onto Danny Welbeck’s head, and the debutant making no mistake just as he had often done so in the colors of other teams at Stamford Bridge. Nice to see him scoring for us, for a change!
Chelsea had spent much of the first half trying to find intricate ways through
the massed ranks of the visitors, but outside of the first 10-15 minutes, when we were a bit more willing to go more direct, we were not making much headway. When we did get into decent positions, Luton would inevitably block the shot. Morgan Rogers did hit the post, in fairness, at the end of a move that definitely deserved a goal, but otherwise it was a frustrating occasion for the first 45 minutes.
Welbeck’s goal in the 50th minute didn’t really change the flow of the game, with Luton simply hoping to keep it close until the late stages. Unfortunately for them, those late stages would bring a goal for Chelsea instead, with Barco winning the ball in midfield, Palmer feeding Estêvão, and the youngster forcing the own goal at the far post after losing his marker 1-v-1.
The job was done. We had a couple great chances to add to the scoreline, but it would stay at 2-0. In stoppage time alone, JP was denied from close range while Gittens hit the inside of the post but saw the shot unluckily bounce straight back out.

- More of a back-four this time from Alonso, with Lacroix and Acheampong the central partnership and Gusto and Chavarria on the sides. Hato on for Gusto for the final 20+ with Acheampong moving wide right.
- Full debuts for Penders, Welbeck, and Barco; and a debut goal for Welbeck!
- Sadly, no debuts for Emegha or Watson off the bench
- Early-season exuberant application of the one of the new rules from IFAB that’s being implemented: substitutes have to leave the pitch in 10 seconds; if they don’t, the sub cannot come on for a minute, or the next break in play, whichever occurs later. Welbeck apparently took too long and JP had to wait, with Chelsea down to ten for those two minutes.
