Karim Adeyemi has opened up about his connection to both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, revealing that his affection for Dortmund developed after Bayern Munich decided to let him leave as a young player.
The Germany international was born in Munich and spent three years in Bayern Munich’s youth academy before the club released him due to disciplinary issues. Adeyemi subsequently continued his development with SpVgg Unterhaching and Red Bull Salzburg before making his return to Germany with Borussia
Dortmund in 2022.
While Adeyemi grew up as a Bayern Munich supporter, he explained that his perspective changed during his teenage years as he began following Dortmund more closely.
“I spent three years at Bayern Munich and they let me go. I’m from Munich, so I was a Bayern fan, but over time Dortmund became my favorite team. I watched a lot of their games as a teenager. I like both clubs and have great memories of my time at Bayern, but I loved my time at Dortmund. The stadium and the fans are incredible,” Adeyemi told Diario AS (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Adeyemi’s comments provide an interesting perspective on his relationship with the two biggest clubs in German football. His early years were spent inside Bayern Munich’s academy, but his experiences as a fan eventually helped create a stronger connection with Dortmund.
Now at FC Barcelona, Adeyemi’s comments also underline how his footballing journey has taken him from supporting Bayern Munich as a child to representing one of their biggest rivals at the senior level to playing for a former Bayern Munich sextuple-winner in Catalonia.
