Even with the survey closed, Notre Dame football fans are still blowing up my inbox with thoughts and feelings about Irish defensive coordinator, Chris Ash, and his current employment status with the program.
71% of Notre Dame fans surveyed, said the Irish should fire Chris Ash — but in what way? Admittedly, the question I provided didn’t allow for nuance or scenarios.
Once the discussion began, the calmer (and probably smarter) fans provided a few ideas:
- Have Freeman take over the defense.
- You can’t fire him after three games — that’s ridiculous.
- Perhaps the worst is behind us.
As for myself, I sit on the fence. Three games
isn’t a great litmus test, but something has to be done. The way that things have started, I have a hard time NOT wanting Ash’s departure at the end of the season. Until we get there, Freeman has to have a plan to step in and take over before things get out of hand.
But maybe that time has already come and gone… but maybe not.
70% of Notre Dame fans believed the Irish will make the college football playoff with a 10-2 record. So, in essence, this season is very much like last season in the sense that it’s do or die for 10 straight games. Every week is the same narrative until it isn’t (which might take another 5 or 6 wins).
