Bayern Munich continued their perfect start to the season with a 4-0 win over Werder Bremen at the Allianz Arena, led by a brace from Harry Kane, who became the fastest ever player to reach 100 goals for
any one club. Luis Diaz and Konrad Laimer provided the other goals for the German Rekordmeister either side of Kane’s brace, rounding out what was yet another comprehensive and dominant performance from Vincent Kompany’s side. Bayern hardly put a foot wrong aside from Joshua Kimmich’s mishap late in the second half that led to Victor Boniface slotting past Manuel Neuer, but the offside flag was rightfully raised, sparing Kimmich’s blushes.
Tom Bischof was given his first start under Vincent Kompany since the FIFA Club World Cup for the Bremen win and he shone quite well for himself. He was a solid presence in Bayern’s midfield pivot alongside Leon Goretzka and then Kimmich when the latter replaced the former in the second half and he also provided the assist for Konrad Laimer’s goal in the 87th minute with a thread of the needle pass to the Austrian international inside of Bremen’s box. That was Bischof’s first goal involvement for Bayern on a night where the opportunity was truly his for the taking with Kimmich starting from the bench due to only just recently getting over an illness and Aleksandar Pavlovic was given a rest having been an unused sub. There is also the matter of Kompany having one eye on next week’s Champions League match at Cypriote side Pafos FC.
Speaking after the match, Bischof was beaming with positivity and described what it felt like to have been given the spot in the dressing room that used to be occupied by Thomas Müller. “It’s an honor for me. He was a great player here. I also have a great neighbor in Stani (Josip Stanisic). So everything’s great,” he enthused (via @iMiaSanMia).
Chances like this might not come as often for Bischof competing against the likes of Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, and Aleksandar Pavlović in midfield and both Konrad Laimer and Raphaël Guerreiro can also be deputized there if needed. For what it’s worth, he got a chance tonight and made the most of it, which Kompany certainly won’t forget.
Bayern Munich was the home side in the Bundesliga on Friday when Werder Bremen came to town.
The Bavarians decimated the visitors 4-0 in a game that was never really close. Bayern Munich was relentless and dominant in every aspect of the match. It is not as if Werder Bremen did not try, but the players just could not match up with the machine that was Bayern Munich.
Let’s get into all of the details — here is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show:
