Michael Olise provided two assists in France’s 3-0 win over Sweden in East Rutherford, New Jersey in the round of 32 match, which took his assists tally to five for the World Cup thus far. The Bayern Munich winger has been an integral part of the French attack that’s been in scorching form between the Bayern man, Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé. Between the three players, they’ve combined for 10 of the 13 goals Les Bleus have scored at the tournament thus far, and on paper, the odds are suggesting
they’ll score at least more than once in the round of 16 matchup against Paraguay.
For Bayern fans, and for anyone who follows the Bundesliga, Olise’s World Cup form should not come as any sort of surprise, as he’s coming off of another impressive season at Bayern where he tallied a total of 22 goals and 31 assists from 52 appearances across all competitions on the way to a domestic double. He’s a player that’s as humble as he is effective, which is part of what makes him such a likeable player, and for anyone who might not have been privy to him prior to the World Cup kicking off has surely taken notice by now.
As he’s been on the Fox Sports commentary team in the United States throughout the World Cup thus far, former Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimović had nothing but pure admiration for Olise in the post-match show after the Sweden win. The vision Olise has, for the big Swede, is what makes him such a deadly attacker for France and Bayern.
“Michael Olise has a vision that the other ones don’t have. When he’s in the game he sees solutions that the other ones don’t see. That’s the vision that others don’t have. Only a genius has that, and Olise is showing that. We’ll see how far France can go, but they’re a scary team. Three of the five best players in the world are in this attack: Dembélé, Olise, and Mbappé. For the other two, you can add Haaland and Yamal. Messi is in a class of his own,” the former Ajax, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, and LA Galaxy striker enthused (via @iMiaSanMia).
With France’s current bracket setup, facing Paraguay in the Round of 16 begs itself to assuming France will make it to the quarterfinals where they will take on either Canada or Morocco, two nations they should also be beating. With that said, Olise’s assists tally is likely to rise as the tournament progresses and it wouldn’t be wise to bet against him finding the back of the net for the first time, either.
