Imagine a Buffalo Bills offense featuring wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., the fourth-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. A few years ago, that’s all anyone in Bills Mafia could talk about as the team looked to transition away from mercurial wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
Harrison presents a divisive conversation on several fronts at the moment, but it’s not a conversation to be ignored. ESPN insider Dan Graziano reported this week that league executives “are wondering whether the Arizona Cardinals
could explore trading 2024 No. 4 pick Marvin Harrison Jr. ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline.”
What if the Buffalo Bills pulled off a trade for the embattled Harrison — might it come to pass that the Cardinals decide compensation is better than potential? What would a deal involve for such a high-profile player? It might not take as much firepower as you think.
It’s possible the Bills could put together a package including a fifth-round pick and a player that brings Harrison to One Bills Drive. The Cardinals would need to replace Harrison’s snaps, so players currently part of Buffalo’s 53-man roster who might be exposed to such a trade include wide receivers Keon Coleman and Joshua Palmer.
Trading Coleman opens up a roster spot for Harrison, which includes renewed opportunity to contribute meaningfully on offense, and earn the contract extension he desires. If instead it’s Palmer who’s traded, the Bills are probably looking for Coleman and Harrison to bring the best out of one another in a battle for playing time and that extension either could be signed to as early as the 2027 NFL season.
Remember, Harrison and Coleman were both selected in the same draft, and each will demand consideration for a contract extension in due time. If we believe that such a trade is possible, we must also consider the pluses and minuses, of which there are many.
Why the Bills should make a trade for Marvin Harrison Jr.
The 2023 Fred Biletnikoff Award winner was once consider the best receiver in all of football. His college production had people talking about Harrison on the same level with current NFL greats and even some all-time Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receivers. The son of one such great, Harrison was considered a generational, can’t-miss prospect, which sent draftniks into a frenzy imagining what he’d bring to an offense.
Then reality dealt him a side quest. Harrison’s potential remains sky-high with many, but he’s yet to show the sort of consistency needed to invest heavily in his future with any offense. It’s a tale familiar to anyone familiar with football and the NFL Draft: X player has a 50/50 shot at succeeding or fizzling out, regardless of that can’t-miss potential.
To this point, it’s clear that Harrison hasn’t lived up to the hype or his draft status. He looks disinterested, lost, and incapable of making even the most routine of plays for Arizona’s offense. That, alone, might give one reason for pause before saying he deserves a shot over someone else currently in the Bills’ system.
In his defense, if so deserved here, Harrison has become an afterthought in the Cardinals’ offensive plans. Through two games in 2026, he’s been targeted just three times, making one reception for 33 yards. In contrast, Palmer, as Buffalo’s fourth or fifth option at times, has made two catches (5 targets) for 77 yards, with both going for touchdowns. Meanwhile, Coleman has caught all seven of his targets for 64 yards, with four of those catches giving Buffalo’s offense a first down.
Yet neither Coleman nor Palmer bring the sort of potential found with Harrison. If you believe that still exists, then it seems wise for the Bills to at least explore trade discussions. Like Coleman, Harrison is a young player on a rookie contract.
As the son of a former NFL all-time great, it’s easy to fall in love with the younger Harrison’s potential. At his best, Harrison would bring elite play to Buffalo’s wide receivers room. Pairing him with wide receivers DJ Moore and Khalil Shakir, plus tight end Dalton Kincaid — Josh Allen would have a fantasy roster of starting pass catchers at his disposal.
It feels like a low-risk move to bring in a player the football world fell in love with before he ever caught a professional pass. It’s perhaps a situation made more enticing if the Bills face injury concerns at wide receiver. Right now, both Coleman (ankle) and Moore (AC joint sprain) are questionable to play in Week 3.
Certainly, there’s no trade on the immediate horizon such that it helps Buffalo in Week 3. Arizona has until the league’s November 10 trade deadline to explore their options. Harrison’s value has never been lower, and the Cardinals may want to do some damage control before entertaining any trade offers. If that’s not true, and they’re willing to listen at this point, however, it’s an idea worth embracing.
You can bet on it that president of football operations/general manager Brandon Beane has already been on the phone. Even though Beane values draft picks, almost no potential selection carries the cachet that brackets Harrison as a former top-five-selected player.
While this may not be the soundest of business logic, successfully trading for Harrison also keeps him away from other teams — namely potential playoff rivals.
What T.J. Houshmandzadeh had to say in support of Marvin Harrison Jr.
There’s a lot of warranted criticism of Harrison at this stage, and he has little other than himself to blame. However, football is a team game and Harrison’s teammates directly impact his production and success or failure to thrive.
Consider the comments former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh made about Harrison in a recent featured appearance with “Speakeasy”:
“Number one: LaFleur, he ain’t f’ing with Marvin Harrison. When you say ‘oh we also have Trey McBride, who’s one of the best underneath guys and there’s only 60 to 65 plays a game you gotta run. When you value somebody, those words don’t even come out your mouth. So that right there tells me he does not value Marvin Harrison as a football player. Marvin Harrison knows that, and this is why we see this. The routes, half speed, his running style ain’t no different. He, (he’s not) trying, because he feels like ‘I’m not gettin’ the ball anyway.’ And this is where… I don’t know how often he talks to senior about this — this is where he has to understand this is making him look bad. Because, everybody else is watching this. And so, your time with the Cardinals is done. They done paid Trey McBride, they done paid Michael Wilson. You are now the third option. If that. You the fourth option in the offense because it’s Trey McBride, it’s Mike Wilson, then it’s Jeremiah Love. Then you. So, you’re gettin’ the crumbs. When we eat, you the runt of the litter. You get what we leave, the leftovers.”
“And so, my advice to Marvin Harrison Jr. would be this: Go all out. Show everybody that this shit really matters to you; that you can create separation; that you can get off — even if you don’t get the ball, they gonna see you’re creating separation. They, the other teams. Your time in Arizona, from that, that quote, it’s over. It’s done. When he was at Ohio State, there (were) actual people that thought he was the best receiver in football. And when I say football, I meant all — literally, people were saying Marvin Harrison Jr. is the best receiver in football. They weren’t just talking college. And so there’s still some people out there that believe, if they get him in their system, he’ll be alright. And I actually do believe if he got into a different system he’d be fine. He’s scarred in Arizona. They’ve never really had a (quarterback) — it ain’t like his rookie year he was terrible. He had a solid rookie season. Whatever has happened from that point until now, mentally, it’s a wrap in Arizona. This dude literally is jogging routes… like they’re run plays. Like, they’re pass plays and he’s making ‘em look like runs. And so that tells me he’s checked out. So my advice to him would be go all out these next however many games you’re in Arizona, and see if you can get your agent to force an issue to get you up out of there. Because, if he stays in Arizona, his career may be over. It’s hard, man, to run these routes full speed when you really know I have no chance of getting the ball. And his daddy never did this type of shit. But this is when frustration sets in, and he was supposed to come out and get with me this summer, and I would’ve really talked to him about it, but it never happened. I feel bad for him, because he can actually play. But in that system, they don’t value you. You don’t have a quarterback, but you better start bustin’ your ass or you’re gonna be out the league.”
Emmanuel Acho then pointed out to Houshmandzadeh that “you are what you put on tape.” Acho added that Harrison’s game tells him that “he has a poor work ethic, he has a poor attitude, he can’t catch, he can’t get open, he doesn’t play with effort. That’s what his game is telling me.”
Anyone, including Houshmandzadeh in this appearance, will tell you that effort is non-negotiable. But he’s not necessarily ready to give up on Harrison, suggesting that what we see on tape isn’t the full picture, and that he can “actually play.”
“From what we’ve seen, it’s partially true. The catch part, he can catch the ball. Has he had some drops? Yes. But he’s not locked in. When you’re not locked in, you really don’t give a — what’s gonna happen. You don’t care. You’re not practicing hard, you’re not even playing hard. Because, now he’s been in the league, this is year three. When you line up and you look at coverage and you know the play call, you know whether you have a chance to get the ball or not just because of the game plan. I would assume he’s a smart player. Smart players know this. That’s why he’s jogging like that. He knows the ball’s not coming to him. He knows the ball’s going somewhere else. But, we see this. The other teams see this. So my advice to him would be ‘you can’t do this.’ And I’m gonna try to reach out to him once I get in this car and drive home just because, this is your future. Do not let this situation wreck you. Don’t let it kill your mental — because, the mind, as you spoke of earlier, is so powerful. Once you start losing your confidence in what you were when you came into the league, it’s so hard to get that back unless you have success. You gotta feel like you the shit regardless if you’re having success or not. And if once that mind goes away to ‘I can’t do it,’ it’s hard to get back to that.”
Any NFL coach and front office now has to decide if what the tape shows, and whether these comments and observations of Harrison made by notable former league pros serve as a detriment or windfall for their organization.
It sure sounds as though Houshmandzadeh believes Harrison’s problem is a matter of zip code, of head coach, offensive system, and also quarterback. There are several players who’ve gone on to highly successful NFL careers after flaming out with their first team. Perhaps Harrison is the next in line for such a redemption arc. So why would any NFL executive stop such a trade dead in its tracks?
Arguments against Bills trading for Marvin Harrison Jr.
The one fact no one can dispute is that Harrison’s most recent tape serves as damning evidence. The lack of effort is fully on display. He hasn’t lived up to expectations overall, but especially through two games in 2026 he’s looked like a shell of the player who dominated college football with Ohio State.
Harrison’s drops are among the most jarring alarms sewn into his recent production. The evidence points to an inferior player at this stage of his career. But is he a lost cause?
It’s unlikely Harrison’s even in the NFL at this point if not for his draft status and surname. Many people fell in love with him simply due to his family lineage, which is of course expected. There are countless situations to point at mirroring his experience. The NFL chews up and spits out more players than it nurtures, and college production doesn’t equal professional success.
Has Harrison simply found out that NFL defenders are elite, far better than any of the competition he regularly faced in college? Or is it down to the Cardinals’ offensive system and their ineffective quarterback play? Maybe it’s both, but neither should give him a pass.
Dogging routes and giving a half-hearted effort on every snap is reflection on his character, which you can be certain NFL executives have noticed. Who’s investing in a guy that’s mentally checked out? One need only look back to Diggs’ late tenure with the Bills to see what comes of a player who’s checked out on his team. Diggs did his best to ruin the locker room, wanted out, and instead of being the dog the offense needed, he was its excrement.
Does One Bills Drive really want to take on a reclamation project in Harrison, a guy who has the potential to ruin a locker room, a team featuring a new head coach in his first year at the helm? Worse yet, Harrison doesn’t have Diggs’ professional resume to lean on.
It’s true Buffalo is in the midst of remaking the passing attack, now featuring Moore as WR1. It’s worth wondering how Harrison would respond to taking another back seat to other players. Coleman and Palmer have both responded well to the changes on offense, and they are likely to play key roles if health is on their side in 2026.
The Bills have invested plenty in Coleman (a draft pick) and Palmer (a key free-agent addition in 2025), and giving up on either at this point in favor of a mentally checked-out Harrison seems risky. All one need do is briefly review a small sample size of Harrison’s recent play, as shared by Rookie Watch:
If Harrison’s current reality is revealing of his long-term future, and he’s that easily checked-out, what happens when the Bills face adversity in a game’s biggest moment? Worse yet, what if he’s not the focal point then, or at any point during the season? We saw what it did to Diggs.
Harrison is already second fiddle to fellow Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson Jr. Similar to Buffalo’s offense with tight end Dalton Kincaid, Arizona also has an elite X-factor in Trey McBride who garners most of the quarterback’s attention.
So where does Harrison fit in the Bills’ offensive equation? Also consider that Buffalo has wide receiver Tyrell Shavers on Injured Reserve, and that the team is rightfully high on him. In-season trades rarely pay huge dividends for players and their new teams, thanks largely to the lack of time in the system and inability to build chemistry with the locker room.
A major red flag here is that Harrison was apparently supposed to connect with Houshmandzadeh this past summer, but it never materialized. If a guy can’t make that effort to meet with someone who already helped out a fellow teammate? It’s not a good look.
If you’re against this trade, then it’s likely you believe the last thing the Bills need is a reclamation project, even if it’s Marvin Harrison Jr.
