My apologies for the delay! I was on vacation as the Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-0) opened the 2026 season with a decisive 59-7 blowout win over the Eastern Illinois Panthers (1-1) on Thursday night.
The Elite
Javon Tracy. Two punt returns for touchdowns? In this economy? One of the question marks heading into the season was who would replace Koi Perich in the return game, and Tracy delivered an emphatic answer, albeit against an inferior opponent. We’ll see how the punt return unit fares as the level of competition
increases, but considering no other Gopher in program history has ever had two punt returns for touchdowns in a single game, Tracy deserves the plaudits. He also hauled in five receptions for 98 yards, and his 55-yard catch-and-run was Minnesota’s longest play from scrimmage in the game.
Darius Taylor. Even with his offensive line doing him few favors (more on that later), the fourth-year running back looked the part of a workhorse for the Gophers, especially in the end zone. He only totaled 14 carries for 56 rushing yards in the game, but found the end zone three times.
Drake Lindsey. Minnesota remains in good hands at the quarterback position, with the second-year signal caller delivering a solid performance, finishing 19-of-24 for 264 passing yards and a touchdown.
The Gopher defense. Save for one drive in the second quarter in which the defense twice to forgot to cover the running back out of the backfield, defensive coordinator Danny Collins’ unit took care of business against Eastern Illinois. The Gophers limited the Panthers to 59 passing yards, 51 rushing yards, and seven points. That’s exactly the kind of performance you expect to see against an FCS opponent.
Zack Harden. The second-year safety made his starting debut alongside Kerry Brown and did not disappoint, finishing tied for second on the team with four total tackles and tied for the team lead with 1.5 tackles for loss. He’ll be tested in the coming weeks, but he certainly looked part in the season opener.
Penalties. Just two penalties against Minnesota in the game.
The Meh
The offensive line. There is a case to be made that this unit belongs under The Ugly considering the caliber of the opponent, but for Week 1, I’ll try not to judge too harshly. But the run blocking was simply not good enough. If you remove Taylor’s 27-yard touchdown run from his total, he carried the ball 13 times for 29 rushing yards, averaging 2.2 yards per carry. That’s not going to cut it. The offensive line, which featured two new starters in right guard Tony Nelson and right tackle D.J. Shipp, struggled to consistently move the line of scrimmage, especially on outside zone plays and in short yardage situations.
The Ugly
Ryan Estrada’s injury. The true freshman running back went down awkwardly as he was being tackled in the fourth quarter and looked to be in obvious pain with a leg injury. Head coach P.J. Fleck confirmed Monday that it was a season-ending knee injury, cutting short what looked to be a promising season for the talented freshman and dealing a blow to the Gophers’ depth at the running back position.
