Kim Min-jae has quietly had an excellent season for Bayern Munich. The caveat? After Jonathan Tah’s arrival, the South Korean center-back has adopted more of a squad rotation role under Vincent Kompany.
Kim started 16 of Bayern’s 30 Bundesliga games this season, featuring a total of 1,806 minutes across all competitions. For context, Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah — Kompany’s preferred center-back partnership — clocked 2,932 and 3,334 minutes respectively.
Kim’s reduced role and heavy interest from
around Europe led many to believe the 29-year-old will leave Munich in the Summer. However, according to Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Kim remains committed to Bayern.
Minjae Kim is currently not planning to leave FC Bayern this summer. He remains fully committed to the team and is not showing any frustration. It remains to be seen whether any top offers will come in.
There have also been no talks or meetings with Fenerbahce in the last days, despite reports. His contract runs until 2028.
BFW Analysis
The former Napoli man is definitely a starting caliber center-back and could easily earn a spot in one of Europe’s top five leagues, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he should be looking for an exit from Bayern.
We witness it across Europe’s elite sides. A deep, quality squad who could theoretically field two starting lineups-worth of first team quality players. Manchester City, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and FC Barcelona all do it, so why can’t Bayern?
Even if a suitable offer comes in, it will cost Bayern more money to find a player of a similar quality happy to accept a squad role.
Considering Kim’s performances this season and his satisfaction with his playing time, there is no reason he should leave Bayern in the Summer.
