After last weekend’s game, Xabi Alonso made an off-hand mention of how Reece James suffered a little knee problem in training leading up to the match, and that he’s going to be week-to-week as we assess his condition.
There were a few scary words in that brief mention, and sure enough, the problem turns out to be a fair bit bigger than initial presented. As confirmed by the manager and an official club statement as well, the Captain has undergone a “minor knee surgery” and will be out for a number
of months.
“We don’t set timelines, but he will be out for several weeks. […] It’s not going to be short, it’s not going to be two, three weeks things, it’s going to be longer and after we will see before Christmas, after Christmas time will tell but things have to be done properly, that he feels right and that needs in the best possible condition and yes, a disappointment for everyone, for him but we need to, we have a squad to follow that to deal with the injuries.”

So not very minor at all.
Alonso’s talking about Christmas, so at least two months. Reports like the Mail are talking more like three. No one’s saying what the injury was, but few things in the knee that require surgery are truly minor. It could be a lot worse of course, but it’s not ideal.
So, another half-season, at least, lost to injury. No great! Get well soon, Reecey!
