The “will they/won’t they/should they” dance over Matt LaFleur’s contract extension last month soaked up just about all of the available discourse resources among Packers watchers. But that wasn’t the only new deal that got done: in addition to LaFleur, general manager Brian Gutekunst also got a new deal, as did cap savant Russ Ball.
Ball has never and won’t ever talk to the media, but we’ll get to hear from Gutekunst today for the first time post-extension. And as he watches two of his former colleagues
(Eliot Wolf and John Schneider) shape the teams that are about to play in the Super Bowl, I’m sure there will be plenty of questions.
I don’t know if Gutekunst’s roster building philosophy is really up for debate. The Packers’ talent level hasn’t been the issue the last couple of seasons, and it certainly wasn’t in 2025. Injuries scuttled the season, not skill.
But that’s not to say there aren’t some possible holes in the Gutekunst blueprint. His lack of action on the defensive line and in the defensive backfield, including an expensive miss on Nate Hobbs, left the Packers with some hard-to-defend holes this year. Jeff Hafley had plenty of challenges dealing with them, and so will his successor Jonathan Gannon.
Gutekunst has never been shy about his vision for the team, and he’ll certainly take any questions head on. But the questions are there, and Gutekunst will have to face them today.
