In this weird season where Chelsea Women have let themselves down against big and small teams alike, the confidence in the Blues being able to turn around deficit is at an all-time low. It’s also an understandable situation as we rarely go into matches with a losing score early on.
Again this is a weird season. And in a routine attack where players like Naomi Girma would have easily gotten the block on a one-two played between Chasity Grant and Lynn Wilms, the American defender failed to do so.
As
expected Villa wouldn’t come out of their shell after such a gift. Thus giving Chelsea all the space they need to start mounting a comeback.
Sam Kerr opened the floodgates. Naomi Girma and Lauren James dully followed with less than 30 minutes of play.
It looked as if we were in for a first-half pummelling after some adjustments on Chelsea’s side. However Villa kept their shooting efficiency via Kirsty Hanson on yet another poor defensive display from the Blues.
What was once though as a pummelling turned into a bloody fight. Hanson equalised our efforts with a brace of her own, as defence once again slept in front of goal and Hannah Hampton didn’t cover herself in much glory either.
Chelsea haven’t been very good in second halves this season. With the team needing at least a goal to get the three points at Kingsmeadow today, we needed to so what head coach Sonia Bompastor had in mind for that to happen.
What we saw was Aston Villa bringing the game to Chelsea’s defensive third, trying some shots at glory that gotten awfully close to hitting the target. Whereas the home side looked a bit too comfortable with keeping possession, recycling it in and around the box and not try at Ellie Roebuck as much.
Even with all their faults you don’t keep a 3-3 scoreline against Chelsea just cruising by. Tiredness would eventually settle in and it was what the Blues needed to get Sjoeke Nüsken time and space to score a fourth goal for us today.
