The Field of Dreams game last night was a rousing success for the Phillies, as they were able to beat the Twins by a score of 7-1. First, legends of the game emerged from the signature Dyersville, Iowa cornfield, including some from Phillies history such as Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton. Once the game began, Kyle Schwarber mashed a majestic home run on the third pitch he saw, sending the ball deep into the Iowan cornfield surrounding the diamond. He later added a second corn bomb, in the fourth,
this time with Brandon Marsh on base. Speaking of Marsh, he added a two run homer of his own in the seventh that gave the Phillies their comfortable 7-1 lead.
Aaron Nola meanwhile pitched five solid innings and collected nine strikeouts. Three Phillies relievers were able to successfully bridge the gap to Jhoan Duran who retired the side on 16 pitches despite it not being a save situation.
After a week of disheartening and rather frustrating baseball, the Phillies were able to show at least for one night that they can be a good team that’s worthy of playing on a national stage such as this one. Some cinematic scenery certainly didn’t hurt one’s ability to forgot some of the heartache caused earlier in the week.
