This was not the five set match up that we have become accustom to seeing between the Huskers and the Blue Jays in the past few years.
Nebraska’s defense held Creighton to -0.033 hitting on the night. The Huskers tallied up 47 digs and nine blocks on the night. Creighton ‘s defense also held the Husker’s offense below their season average, hitting .202. They also had nine blocks.
Can we talk about Kenna Cogill?! She started for a sick Mania Ogbechie and played amazingly. I can tell why DBK has such
confidence in her middles. Cogill ended the night with eight kills, hitting .727, she also had two blocks.
The Nebraska back court was awesome too. Harper Murray and Teraya Sigler did not have the best nights hitting, however the way they play the back row so impressive. To add to that, Olivia Mauch is all over the court and her serve receive is fantastic.
Andi Jackson led all players with 9 kills, hitting .571 and she had 6 blocks and 3 digs as well.
The Husker serve was strong once again, tallying five aces on the night, Harper Murray serving three of those.
Nebraska 3 – Creighton 0
Set 1 Nebraska 25 – Creighton 13
Nebraska took the first point of the set as they have many other times, on a Virginia Adriano kill. Nebraska started off strong on the net with a kill and a a couple blocks by Andi Jackson.
Both Nebraska and Creighton were playing tough defense and the match started out with a couple good rallies. Bergan Reilly put the Huskers’ balanced offense on display early in the match, having seven kills from six different players in the first eleven points.
Harper Murray had her best start of the year jumping out to four kills in the first set. Kenna Cogill, starting in place of an ill Mania Ogbechie also had four kills, hitting 1.000 on the set. Nebraska ended set 1 the same way they started it, with a kill by Adriano.
Nebraska’s passing was excellent and they were playing in system most of the time.
While the Huskers did not struggle during this set, their serving was not ideal. They had four service errors for the set.
Nebraska hit .444 on the set and held the Blue Jays to -0.065.
Set 2 Nebraska 25 – Creighton 15
Creighton came out firing in the second set going on a 3-0 run early, before a missed serve and a Bergan Reilly and Andi Jackson block put the Huskers up 5-4.
Creighton’s block and floor defense picked up and the Huskers hitting errors were tallying up as they tried different shots.
This set saw a lot of long rallies with both teams showing their blocking prowess and picking up a lot of digs.
Olivia Mauch started a 5-0 run for the Huskers with a service ace. While that was the first ace of the game, it wasn’t the only one of the set with Laney Choboy getting one and Harper Murray notching two.
Set 3 Nebraska 25- Creighton 19
Nebraska and Creighton went back and forth throughout the start of this set.
Laney Choboy and Harper Murray collided while going for a ball and Choboy had to be subbed out. Nebraska sent in Ryan Hunter and Campbell Flynn and started playing a 6-2. There was a little confusion on some of the plays that led to some Blue Jays points, however Nebraska’s block helped give the Huskers a small lead.
Virginia Adriano was called on a net play on a challenge (which I saw no evidence of her being in the net, but nobody asked me) and after that she rolled off two powerful kills helping the Huskers jump to a 17-11 lead.
Creighton had a series of challenges toward the end of the match which broke the flow of the game a bit.
We got to see Virginia Adriano play back row as Choboy did not come back into the match and DBK kept Reilly and Adriano in the game for the full rotation. This also gave Nebraska another attack option from the back row.
The match was finished off by a kill by Kenna Cogill.
