In an interview with Sport Bild’s Henning Feindt, Christian Falk, and Tobi Altschäffl (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl was asked about the club’s pursuit of
Florian Wirtz from the summer and the executive sounds like he still believes Wirtz would have been an impact player in Bavaria.
However, Eberl also revealed that jersey number could have been an issue for Wirtz:
Sport Bild: Have you ever thought that Florian Wirtz might have been better off at FC Bayern?
Eberl: “We made it clear in all our discussions that we would have loved to have him at FC Bayern and that he would have been a great fit for us. Florian then chose Liverpool. I wish him all the best in representing German football in the Premier League.”
Sport Bild: Is it true that his shirt number at FC Bayern was already discussed in talks with Wirtz?
Eberl: “Shirt numbers are an important topic for players.”
Sport Bild: However, the number 10 he wanted had already been promised to Jamal Musiala. Right?
Eberl: “We were completely transparent about that as well.”
Given how things have played at Liverpool for Wirtz, it would be curious to know if the youngster would make a different decision if he had another chance.
