We got Marquette women’s basketball news on Tuesday morning, just not new player news. Head coach Cara Consuegra has announced the addition of Sheila Boykin as an assistant coach.
Boykin comes over from South Florida, where she had been on staff since the 2023-24 season. Her time in Tampa ended up cut short by the departure of head coach Jose Fernandez to the Dallas Wings in late October 2025 and the Bulls moved forward with a new head coach this spring. Boykin also spent a season as an assistant
at Loyola-Chicago as well as a pair of years at Cal State Northridge as a full fledged assistant coach. She was also on staff at San Diego State for two years as a graduate assistant before that.
She can bring a value add to the staff by way of four years of high major competition in college basketball. Boykin played 113 games for LSU from 2011 through 2015, ending up as a part-time starter her senior year. She finished her time in Baton Rouge with career averages of 2.8 points, 3.2 rebounds per game. Listed as a 6’2” forward at the time, I’d imagine that she’ll get a chance to work with Marquette’s post players….. once Consuegra figures out who those are for the 2026-27 season.
Because it’s an obvious topic that will come to mind both in general because of the state of college basketball in 2026 and because Marquette has 10 open roster spots right now, we should check in with the portal tracker to see how things are going at USF with their coaching change. On3 shows five players in the portal, although none of them immediately jump off the page as obvious impact performers.
We do have a lingering question here, and that’s exactly how long Cara Consuegra has been working on hiring for this position. Is Boykin replacing the recently departed Chaia Meier, who is now the head coach at Bradley…. or is she replacing the mysteriously departed Khadijah Rushdan, who has not been with the team since January? In other words, should we be expecting another assistant hire in the immediate future, or is Consuegra going to ride with her three returning assistant coaches and Boykin?
