Real Madrid’s season comes to an end in disappointing circumstances. At one point, the team had gotten itself into a position to at least take the game into extra time, but Eduardo Camavinga’s untimely red card made Real Madrid fall like a house of cards in the closing minutes of the second leg in Munich. Some painful missed chances by Vinicius Jr did not help the team either. It was always going to be a mammoth task to overturn the first-leg deficit. Despite Bayern’s clear dominance, Real Madrid almost
did it, until they didn’t. The 3-2 lead by the end of the first leg seemed like a distant memory at full-time on the night.
Despite Madrid being ahead in the first half, Bayern were clearly the better team on the pitch, creating chance after chance and keeping Madrid’s defense on its toes. The gap in cumulative final third touches was glaring.
Bayern also dominated almost every zone on the pitch. Some of it was part of Alvalro Arbeloa’s design. The chances Real Madrid were creating were on the counter-attack. These chances were few and far between for Real Madrid, and they did not even take all of them.
Except for take-ons and aerials won, Bayern dominated every individual player metric in this game. Josua Kimmich and Michel Olise were extraordinary.
For two consecutive seasons, Real Madrid are going trophyless. Barcelona have all but secured LaLiga. There’s a lot of pondering and figuring out to be done at the Bernabeu from now until the end of summer.
