We are finally into Week 1. The San Francisco 49ers will kick off their regular season against the Seattle Seahawks. Since this is the first week, the final batch of predictions is rolling in, and wouldn’t you know it, there’s a prediction that has the 49ers winning the Super Bowl.
This is also a prediction by someone who is not a homer, so it carries more weight.
CBS Sports’ John Breech has released his 2025 NFL season predictions, which include the 49ers going 13-3, winning the NFC West, and avenging
a prior Super Bowl loss by beating the Baltimore Ravens 27-24. I don’t know if a Super Bowl win over the Ravens would erase the pain of Super Bowl XLVII, where the 49ers lost to the Ravens 34-31, but it’d be nice not just to go back, but actually win one this century.
We haven’t even gotten to the other bold prediction.
“I have the Cardinals making the playoffs and that’s not even my boldest prediction out of the NFC West this year due to the fact that I have BROCK PURDY winning MVP,” Breech wrote.
I’d love to make something snarky about Brock Purdy winning MVP only because he has x, y, and z, but I’ve used logical rebuttals enough over the last few weeks. Besides, why work harder when I can work smarter? By that I mean Breech has so eloquently said what I’ve been going off on, so I’ll use his words:
The last time Purdy had a mostly healthy roster came in 2023 when he finished fourth in the MVP voting after an impressive season that saw him throw for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns. Purdy doesn’t get the respect he probably deserves and that’s mostly because he plays in Kyle Shanahan’s quarterback-friendly offense. However, this is going to be the year where everyone finally agrees that Purdy is a top seven quarterback in the NFL.
Breech acknowledges the 49ers’ easy schedule, something that seems to be getting overlooked in the prediction game here. He also notes that while Purdy doesn’t have his full arsenal to start the season, he’ll have it by the end (hopefully), and he currently has Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle.
He might have more. Jauan Jennings has returned to practice, and the 49ers may be considering Kendrick Bourne’s return to the team. Having those two, along with Ricky Pearsall, should be enough.
A Super Bowl prediction might be lofty. But playoffs? That feels like the floor. With the youth on the team, I’d be satisfied with the 49ers making the playoffs and getting a win or two, so the second-years and rookies get that postseason experience and know what to prepare for in 2026.
Regardless of mine or the above predictions. We have a Super Bowl prediction. That’s better than hearing about people thinking Brock Purdy can’t possibly keep getting good players to be efficient.
