Before Monday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, the Pittsburgh Pirates made a roster move involving two of their former highly-regarded prospects.
The Pirates activated outfielder Jack Suwinski off the 10-day injured list. To make room on the roster, infielder/outfielder Ji Hwan Bae was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Suwinski was placed in the IL with a right groin strain on August 29. He finished 0-3 with two strikeouts in his return. Suwinski lowered his average to .129 and has 47 strikeouts in 124
at-bats.
Suwinski, 27, entered Monday with a .199 career average and 410 strikeouts in 386 games. 2025 is a far cry from Suwinski’s 2023 season, where he hit 26 home runs in 144 games and earned a 2.1 WAR.
His WAR plummeted to -1.7 last season, slashing .182/.264/.324 with nine homers in 88 games.
Bae totaled one hit in 20 at-bats this season and hasn’t been able to figure it out at the plate over four seasons. He owns 22 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 44 RBIs, and a .233 average in 163 games from 2022 to 2025.
Bae also hasn’t been able to find a steady defensive position around the infield and outfield, playing primarily second and center.
The Pirates honored The Great One, Roberto Clemente, prior to and during the game against the Cubs.
All Pirates donned No. 21, and Clemente’s number was cut into the grass in right field. The Pirates also conducted an all-Spanish broadcast, with Roberto Clemente Jr., on SportsNet Pittsburgh+.
The Pirates were eliminated from playoff contention on Monday following a 4-0 loss to the Cubs.
