When you look around the NFL landscape on September 1st, it’s easy to get tunnel vision and focus only on the Chicago Bears. You might be worried about the health of the Bears’ secondary, you might be worried about the left tackle position, but you aren’t worried about the quarterback.
So when we look around the rest of the league, we should pause and say, “Thank you, Caleb Williams.”
Thank you for stabilizing the most important position in football for the Chicago Bears.
Thank you for providing more
hope at the position than the Bears have had since World War II.
Thank you for leading this offense and this team.
Let us, as Bears fans, be thankful that we didn’t have to bring in Kyler Murray and hope he pays attention in team meetings because JJ McCarthy is already failing.
Let us be thankful that we aren’t the Cleveland Browns keeping four quarterbacks. They say if you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks. So what does it mean when you have four?
Let us be thankful that we aren’t the New York Jets or Miami Dolphins, playing a veteran QB while hoping the bottom drops out so they can draft Arch Manning or Dante Moore in 2027.
Let us be thankful that we aren’t the Atlanta Falcons and staring at UDFA Rookie Jack Strand possibly getting starts at quarterback sooner rather than later.
Let us be thankful that this isn’t Mike Glennon vs Mitch Trubisky, Mitch Trubisky vs Nick Foles, Justin Fields vs Andy Dalton, or any of the other quarterback controversies we’ve had over the years.
Let us be thankful that Caleb Williams is the Chicago Bears quarterback.
It’s been a long time coming. Sid Luckman’s last good year was 1947. For a living Bears fan to really remember Luckman as the Bears quarterback, they would have to be in their 90s today.
Sorry, Jay Cutler. Sorry Jim McMahon. But basically every living Bears fan has never experienced this at the quarterback position.
How good will Caleb be? What is the ceiling? Nobody knows. But in this case, the uncertainty is fun. It will be fun to watch Williams continue to develop and improve and see just how good this quarterback can become.
Will he be a Pro Bowl-caliber QB? Will he be an All-NFL QB? A Hall of Fame QB? An all-time great? It’s all on the table; now, it’s just a matter of how far Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams can soar.
So thank you, Caleb Williams. Thank you for rescuing Chicago Bears fans from the endless circle of mediocre quarterbacks and quarterback controversies that have surrounded this team since we were born.
