If RB Leipzig head coach Ole Werner learned anything during his team’s second half collapse in a 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich three weeks ago, it is that the Bavarians can be hurt.
“We were able to take
several positives from it. We played well for more than 80 minutes, however, the fact is that we have to be capable of playing even better. Firstly, it’s a different competition, and secondly, the last game showed us that we can find ways to hurt Bayern,” Werner said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I think we will be able to find the right solutions. We also saw that we won’t come out on top if the game dissolves into an all-out attacking free-for-all. We need to stick to our plan, as we will only be able to record strong attacking moments if we maintain our shape and structure. On the other hand, we also need to defend well. Bayern are the favorites, but we feel comfortable with that and feel as though it will suit us.”
So, how will Werner attempt to take down Bayern Munich? It will come down to defending.
“It will come down to defending well and aggressively in all areas of the pitch. At times, we will also need to defend deep, which doesn’t always feel good. We need to play as a team, keep spaces tight and work against the ball as a unit. We want to play our football too though and carry a threat. The recent league game showed that we’re capable of doing that. Now, in a knockout competition, we will need to make sure we take our chances. We have players on the pitch who have what it takes to hurt Bayern,” said Werner.
That is much easier said than done when it comes down to trying to stop the likes of Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Díaz.
