Club América have been crowned Champions of the 2025/2026 Women’s Concacaf Champions Cup after they defeated the Washington Spirit of the NWSL 5-3. This is now two trophies in one week after winning the 2026 Clausura a week ago and by doing so they put women’s football in Mexico on the global stage.

The game was nothing short of excitement as the crowd at the stadium and the eyeballs at home were awarded with eight goals over 90 minutes. The action started in the 22nd minute thanks to a goal by youngster
Aylin Alvarez. Scarlett Camberos made her way up the left flank, attacking like she always does. Alvarez made her way into the box where the captain passed her the ball and Alvarez sent it into the back of the net despite being marked the whole time. It was a terrible mistake by defender Rebeca Bernal who should have stopped the shot before it happened as she was next to Alvarez the entire time but for some reason did not step up.
It then didn’t take long for the second goal to come for the Aguilas thanks to another mishap from the Spirit defense. Washington was unable to clear the ball outside of the penalty area which Camberos took advantage of when she passed a loose ball to Geyse. The Brazilian passed one Washington defender, then another and then finally past the goalkeeper Sandy Maclever to net her team’s second goal of the night.
As we all know, a 2-0 scoreline is very deceiving and it’s one that any team can rally from behind and that is what Washington did. In the 30th minute Sofia Cantore took the ball from behind the midfield line and made her way up the center of the pitch. From distance, far away from the penalty area, the forward shot the ball towards the goal where it made its way under the diving arms of Itzel Velasco to pull the Spirit within one. This goal was an easy one for the striker who had no push back from the Aguilas and Velasco somehow was unable to push the ball away from her net. Washington made their share of mistakes on their end and now it was América’s turn.
With only a goal difference, this was going to be anyone’s game. The Aguilas could extend their lead or Washington could make a comeback. It was the NWSL team that decided to re-enter this game. It only took 36 seconds exactly for the Spirit to level the game in the Estadio Hidalgo. Rosemonde Kouassi got on the end of a through pass as she made her way up the right side of the field towards the box. Sofia Ramos was the defender whose job it was to mark the Ivorian forward but Ramos got outplayed but the striker and Kouassi got the ball past the defender and Velasco as the ball made its way into the back of the net to level the game 2-2.
América allowing the Spirit to make their way back into the game should not be a surprise as they have blown leads before. The most memorable one being the Apertura 2025 final where they allowed Tigres Femenil to make their way back from a 3-0 deficit in 45 minutes. It looked like this was going to happen again after the NWSL side took the lead for the first time in the game in the 58th minute. Leicy Santos sent a pass to Kouassi who once again took on Ramos to make her way into the box. This time the Ivorian had a harder time shaking the defender but the striker pulled out a cheeky move and sent the ball towards the net where it bounced off of Velasco’s hand and behind her into the net to take the lead.
This lead did not last long as the Aguilas were able to level the game just a few minutes later. Goalkeeper Maclever made a giant mistake as she was playing in the back and she was not paying attention to her surroundings. Geyse was mulling around the area and decided to stay close to MacIever who attempted to restart the game by kicking the ball out into the field but Geyse was there to block the ball from leaving and it ended up going into the net to level the game at 3-3.
After the third goal, the game lulled a bit from both sides as neither team was able to break the deadlock. That was until the subs came on and changed the game. Spaniard Irene Guerrero was subbed on after the 70th minute and was the spark her team needed her to be. She took the ball from midfield and made her way up the center of the field. The midfielder passed the ball to an open Camberos on the left side. Camberos then made her way into Washington’s box where she sent the ball back to Guerrero who did not hesitate and sent it into the back of the net to regain the lead. Guerrero was just what América needed to take back control of the game.
As the game was hitting close to the 90th minute Washington was still searching for a last minute goal to level the game. A last second goal did come but it was not for the Spirit but for América. Geyse made her way up the right flank where she easily lost her mark and made it into the box. The Brazilian could have taken the shot herself to secure a hat-trick, but instead she passed the ball off to Camberos, who also made her way into the box, and the captain kicked the ball into the back of the net to put the nail into the coffin.
Just a week ago Club América won the Clausura 2026 trophy after handedly beating Monterrey and now they won the Concacaf Women’s Champions Cup. They are the first team from Mexico to win the title after Gotham FC of the NWSL won it last year in the debut tournament. This win also punched América’s ticket to the first ever edition of the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup. After years of struggle, the club has finally hit success and put Mexico’s name on the international stage of women’s soccer and has shown that Liga MX Femenil is not a league to mess with and should be shown the respect it deserves.
