Bayern Munich are preparing for a change behind the scenes, with the club and head of scouting Nils Schmadtke mutually agreeing to an early termination of his contract following confidential discussions. Schmadtke will officially leave the club on January 31, 2027, per FCBayern.com.
Schmadtke took over responsibility for scouting the first team and the campus in October 2024, playing an important role in restructuring the club’s scouting department and shaping its approach to squad planning and talent
identification. Sporting director Max Eberl praised Schmadtke’s contributions over the past two years and thanked him for his work.
“Nils Schmadtke has been a tremendous asset in scouting and squad planning over the past two years. As head of scouting, he has shaped the department with many new ideas. I would like to thank him for his excellent work and wish him all the best for the future,” Eberl said.
Schmadtke also released a statement reflecting on his time in Munich and the work accomplished during his tenure.
“Working for FC Bayern was a special task and a great honor. I am proud of how we restructured the scouting department over the past two years, both for the professionals and for the young talents at the campus. My special thanks go to my team for their passion, their expertise, and the fantastic collaboration. I leave with a good feeling and wish the club and everyone involved all the best for the future,” Schmadtke stated.
However, there is more to the departure than the official statements suggest. Per Abendzeitung journalist Maximilian Koch (via @iMiaSanMia), Schmadtke was considered a close confidant of Eberl, but had reportedly been facing internal criticism for some time. Bayern have now decided that a change is necessary.
Christoph Freund and Jochen Sauer, who is now responsible for the Campus, will be tasked with finding a replacement.
It is another notable personnel change within Bayern’s sporting department. Schmadtke was brought in to help reshape the scouting operation, and his departure raises questions about the direction Eberl and Freund want to take the department moving forward.
The restructuring at Säbener Straße continues, even away from the pitch.
