Cody Gakpo becomes the latest player to extend his Anfield stay on Saturday when the club announced that he has extended his contract. Gakpo was originally contracted until summer of 2028. The new length of the deal or details surrounding it have not yet been revealed, but it’s clear that Arne Slot values the contributions of the Dutch forward.
He has started in both of the team’s opening two games this season and already has one goal and two assists under his belt this season. In fact, since he’s
arrived, he’s made 131 appearances for the club, scoring 42 goals and picking up 16 assists. He’s lifted both the Carabao Cup and Premier League trophies.
With this new deal, Liverpool have likely secured the best playing years of his career.
About his decision, Gakpo told the official site, “I feel at home, my family feels at home and that’s also a big decision always. They feel good. I’m very happy at the club, a good group, good teammates, so the life around the football itself is very good and I enjoy every moment of it. I’m very grateful that I can extend.”
Gakpo wants to continue to grow with the club and believes that they are working hard to create something special after their big first season with Slot.
“Obviously trying to win more things with the club [is my aim], with the team,” he said.
“I think we have a very good squad at the moment and we’re trying to build on something special again. Obviously last season we won the league, so we have to defend it with the best of our capabilities. We want to also win the Champions League and the other cups, so that’s what we are going for.
“For me personally, I think I’d like to keep on developing, so every year has to be a better year than the year before. That’s what we’re aiming for.”
The news broke a day before Gakpo is expected to start again on Sunday when Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield.
