49ers happy to be in Australia, call it ‘a cool experience’
“We’re technically in the future from where we’re from, and the Rams [who don’t leave for the U.S. until later this week] are in the present,” Shanahan said. “I don’t have to talk about injuries until tomorrow. So, I’m not talking about them.”
Shanahan then tried to explain the team’s plan for the week while vacillating between what day and time it is in the United States versus what it is in Australia.
“When I look at my clock and it says
the time and then I try to see my family’s time and then it says the time, but it says yesterday, I don’t even get how that’s possible,” Shanahan said. “I think it’s Monday. However, though, it’s Sunday in the present. So, I’m going to mess that up all week if you guys ask me. But today is just our first day of the game plan, which is a Wednesday. We’ll put in some on Thursday. Friday is the final part of the game plan. Saturday, we walk through and we play on Sunday, which is a Friday in Australia and a Thursday in the U.S. Don’t ever make me do that again.”
…..For his part, Shanahan said he hasn’t had many chances to get out and see Australia aside from one 30-minute walk. He was then asked if anything has surprised him about the country so far.
“Yeah, that I don’t see kangaroos and crocodiles everywhere,” Shanahan said, laughing. “I was expecting to see that. It looks like a very normal, cool city.”

Kyle Shanahan reveals his thoughts on 49ers-Rams, Australia ahead of Week 1
“I haven’t picked up on it. I actually, I struggle with accents. I’m not that good at hearing it, but it’s actually close. I went to France earlier this offseason and I really struggle with English in a French accent. I do it better with English in Australian accents, so I’ve understood people much better. But, I haven’t been out and about enough.”
Brayden Willis goes unclaimed; set to return to the practice squad
“Per the NFL’s transaction wire, Willis went unclaimed. Willis showed positional versatility during the preseason, but he was also a 7th-rounder from ‘23 with as many regular-season receptions since then as you and I.
That means the team can bring him back to the practice squad and potentially elevate him to the active roster for this upcoming week against the Rams. He’s expected to practice with the team after re-joining the practice squad, as he did not leave Australia, per Matt Maiocco.
Willis’s best chance to contribute offensively is at fullback. During this past preseason, he lined up at fullback 15 times.”
Nick Bosa, Christian McCaffrey don’t practice as 49ers begin Week 1 preparation
“I’m flying out there, I’m going to f–king play,” Bosa said.
McCaffrey spoke to the media before practice on Monday, but he did not take part in on-field work during the portion of practice that was open to the media.”
