Die Folgen: Bayern’s 5-0 win over FK Bodø/Glimt in the UCL (Bavarian Football Works)
Bayern Munich did not get off to a rousing start vs. FK Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League, but it did close with a bang.
Powered by five second half goals, Bayern Munich ultimately smashed the visitors 5-0 in a game that should give fans some hope that the squad is figuring out how to play together. It was an impressive victory for the Bavarians, who took an important first step in their Champions League journey with the win.
Let’s dive into the details, here are some quick hitters on the match:
- As always, let’s begin with a look at the starting XI:
- Vincent Kompany went with what we can assume to be his Champagne XI for this match (apparently the coach was not willing to risk anything after a tough draw last weekend vs. Schalke 04). The biggest news was the return of Jamal Musiala to the starting XI, which was a welcome sight.
- Bodø/Glimt was not backing down from Bayern Munich early on and did what we expected — press Bayern Munich as hard as hell.
- Joshua Kimmich sent a great ball in toward the net in the 5th minute, but Musiala and Luis Díaz could not get on the end of it.
- Bodø/Glimt defending was very disciplined and tight as it had energy early on. It is very clear that laziness or slacking is not tolerated in that setup. You know what? That is kind of refreshing in the modern game.
- Bayern Munich controlled play early, but found space hard to come by. With eight Bavarians consistently in the final third and up to all 11 Bodø/Glimt players, it was tight.
- Díaz is making a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes of late. That heavy workload last season and the World Cup truly might have caught up to him. Kompany should consider having someone else play left wing this weekend. Lennart Karl or Jamal Musiala could do the job (or…maybe Alphonso Davies?). It’s not a knock on Díaz, but when you see a player so skilled have trouble with his touches, controlling ball, and reading plays, it is a sign that he might be exhausted.
- Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović had very good games overall (Kimmich had one, big gaffe, but the Bavarians survived it).
- While the first half finished at 0-0, it was very telling that Bayern Munich continued to struggle offensively. It is too early to panic, but some of it looks like rustiness and a lack of chemistry, while other parts look like some guys just need a rest.
- Just two minutes into the second half, Bayern Munich finally got off the schneid. Kane tried to force a shot, which was deflected….right to Musiala, who had a terrific finish for a 1-0 lead! That certainly eased the tension.
- The floodgates would then open.
- In the 58th minute, Laimer sent a great diagonal ball to Kane, who put his attempt just wide.
- Kane would make good on his next chance, though. Olise whipped in a beautiful free kick from the right side that perfectly swung onto the head of the hard-charging Englishman for a thunderous header goal.
- In the 67th minute, Kimmich had a horrific turnover when he got stripped by Andreas Helmersen, who sent his long range attempt wide of the goal as Neuer tried to scramble back into place. Helmersen will want that one back.
- In the 77th minute, a cleared corner from Michael Olise landed at the feet of Davies, who absolutely smashed a half-volley for a 3-0 lead.
- Six minutes later, Olise ripped off a long distance shot that backup goalkeeper Julian Lund had no chance to stop. What a strike!
- Saibari, who entered in the 65th minute as a sub, seemed to have a nice burst, and looked much more energetic than he did last weekend vs. Schalke 04.
- Josip Stanišić is a very solid defensive player, but he might not be able to hit the broad side of a barn while shooting.
- The second half was very encouraging for Bayern Munich and displayed why the team is so dangerous. With so much quality and depth, the Bavarians can just break the spirit of even the most confident teams. Bodø/Glimt is legit (and no, not at Bayern Munich’s level, but legit nonetheless), but just eventually caved under the pressure created by the German Rekordmeister.
- Olise would add another tally two minutes into added time to make it 5-0. Meister of the Match was likely already sealed up at that point, but the Frenchman added some icing to the cake.
- Overall, Bodø/Glimt gave its all and played with heart, but Bayern Munich was just too strong. When the Bavarians started to click offensively, they were opportunistic, aggressive, crafty, and persistent. The second half was truly overwhelming by Bayern Munich, and gave the rest of the UCL field a look at what it might have to deal with down the road.
United, Spurs eyeing Tresoldi (ESPN)
