Jürgen Klopp’s first international break as Germany coach was always going to be about discovery. Rather than immediately settling on a rigid squad, Klopp brought more than 40 players into the picture during September, splitting them across two groups and giving a remarkable number of young or inexperienced players an opportunity to make an impression.
Now, that phase is coming to an end.
Following Germany’s disappointing 0–0 draw with Greece, Klopp made it clear that the evaluation process is about
to become much more focused. As reported by DW Sports: “We will now begin gathering insights and assessing the best performances.”
That could be one of the most important developments of Klopp’s early tenure.
The next international break should provide a much clearer picture of which players have genuinely convinced the new Germany coach. Instead of rotating through 40-plus players, Klopp can begin narrowing the pool toward something closer to the 23 or 24 players he would realistically want for competitive matches and major tournaments.
That does not necessarily mean the door is closed for the players who did not shine during this camp. Klopp has already demonstrated that he is willing to look beyond established names, and players such as Aleksandar Pavlović, Tom Bischof, Jonas Urbig, Derry Sherhant, and Philipp Treu have all given him plenty to consider.
But the standard is about to change.
September was about gathering information. The next stage is about making decisions.
Klopp now has two games, dozens of training sessions, and an enormous amount of new information to work with. Some established players strengthened their positions, while others may have created genuine competition for their places.
And that is ultimately what this experimental camp was designed to accomplish.
The Germany squad should become smaller, more competitive, and more clearly defined from here. By the time Klopp has to select his next squad, there should be far fewer question marks — and considerably more pressure on every player fighting for one of those 23 or 24 spots.
