Variety posted a lengthy video today of Paul “Triple H” Levesque and Shawn Michaels talking about how they will lead WWE into the future.
One of the more interesting discussions in the video is about the development of young stars like Je’Von Evans and Trick Williams. WWE’s creative team will give them points to say in their promos and explain the idea of their characters, but it’s ultimately up to the talent to find their own way to deliver the message so that it resonates with fans.
For example,
Triple H doesn’t know what the hell Lemon Pepper Steppers are, but he knows it sounds really cool when Trick talks about it on SmackDown.
“I certainly can’t write for Trick…I don’t even know what the fuck Lemon Pepper Steppers are. It doesn’t make any sense to me. It shouldn’t.
I can feel it when he says it, the cool stuff, for the most part. I can feel the crowd react to it, or I can feel the things that are clicking for him. But I can’t tell him, if he runs dry on cool shit to say, he ain’t getting it from me.
The character that you put around it, the emotion that you put around on it, your spin on it, all that stuff, is really what makes it great.”
As far as Evans is concerned, WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash recently came under fire for saying, “He’s a little bit too fucking Mr. Bojangles for me. I wish he was a little bit more urban.” Without mentioning those phrases, Triple H said Nash is wrong if he thinks WWE is telling Je’Von to act a certain way on Raw.
“I saw [Nash] make a mention of Je’Von and say, well, ‘I wish they treated his character differently. He’s a little too much of this for me.’
Somebody told me about it, I was like, that’s just him. That isn’t us telling him [how to act]. That’s just who he is. That’s how he acts. That’s how he talks to me backstage. That’s how he is in the afternoon. And then we just kind of give him the gist of what he’s gonna say, and then he goes and says it. But that’s just who he is.”
Do you think the future of WWE is in good hands from a creative and talent development standpoint with Triple H and Shawn Michaels leading the way? Let me know in the comments below, Cagesiders.
