Of late, Germany has received serious and very fair criticism over its footballing talent pipeline.
For one reason or the other, the country is producing less top end talent. There were even worries that this disappearing talent would affect the goalkeeper position, as little new talent seemed to crop up behind Manuel Neuer and Marc-André ter Stegen.
But, in recent years, multiple top goalkeeper talents have made themselves known. Jonas Urbig has joined Bayern Munich in an effort to find a successor
to Neuer and has looked quite promising, Dennis Seimen has long been praised as an unbelievable talent and will be VfB Stuttgart’s No.1 once he returns from his current injury while Mio Backhaus has drawn a lot of plaudits, earning himself a move to high flying SC Freiburg.
But one the first talents to really catch the eye was Noah Atubolu.
The SC Freiburg youth product (on loan with Eintracht Frankfurt for 2026/27) has been a regular in the Bundesliga since the start of the 2023/24 season, making the 24-year-old comfortably the most experienced of the aforementioned lot, and has caught the eye due to his sensational shot stopping and ridiculous penalty saving rate (currently at a 100% save rate for the last six penalties he has faced). There have been multiple calls for previous Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann to include him in many Germany squads, but Nagelsmann had resisted those calls.
According to Florian Plettenberg, however, new Germany manager Jürgen Klopp will not leave Atubolu out at all:

For now, it seems that Ter Stegen will become Klopp’s #1. But the FC Barcelona loanee has been prone to dips in form for Germany and serious injuries in recent years. If he becomes unavailable, it will likely fall to the young generation of goalkeepers to battle it out. Between Urbig’s current status as backup keeper behind Neuer, Seimen’s injury and inexperience and Backhaus’ lesser fame, it is not unreasonable to place Atubolu as the top candidate to replace Ter Stegen if he ever needed replacing.
For now, Atubolu will likely be content with making the squad. But he will have ambitions to challenge for the #1 position in the future.
