Bayern Munich’s front office is thrilled with the signing of 23-year-old German defender Nathaniel Brown. Despite a number of solid performances at the World Cup, Bayern was able to keep Brown’s price tag at a reasonable level that satisfied all parties.
Many fans and pundits believe that the acquisition of Brown indicates the end of the road for Alphonso Davies’ tenure at Bayern. According to Christian Falk (via @iMiaSanMia), that is not the case.
Alphonso Davies would like to stay at Bayern, and
the club has no problem with him staying put. They know he has a contract and that he’s a very good player. The problem was never Davies’ quality – it’s his injury proneness. Bayern want Nathaniel Brown not to replace Davies but because they believe he’s a big talent for the future and don’t want to risk losing him to a Premier League club. Both players are also versatile and can play in more than one position. There’s no clear need to sell Davies, but if a ‘really good offer’ came in for him, Bayern would at least consider it.
Davies signed an expensive contract extension in February 2025 but torn his ACL the following month. After a lengthy nine-month recovery, he returned to action. Unfortunately, he picked up three different muscle injuries during the Rückrunde. He has only played 16 minutes for Canada at the World Cup due to the sensitive nature of his recent injuries.
Davies’ high salary and injury streak has made him nearly unsellable. If he can return to full fitness in the 2026/27 campaign, this might be a blessing in disguise for Bayern that forces them to continue the investment in his world class potential.
An extra facet to Falk’s report is the emphasis on the versatility of both players. Davies’ youth development was more focused on the attacking end and Brown can play at either left-back or right-back. Konrad Laimer just signed a contract extension as well and Josip Stanišić has logged nearly 4,000 minutes over the past 12 months. This will give Vincent Kompany an added layer of depth to Bayern’s backline during deep runs in the Champions League and DFB-Pokal.
