Barcelona midfielder Gavi has undergone surgery this week and been ruled out for around five months in news that came as a real shock.
Gavi was only expected to miss a few more weeks of action, but it turns
out the injury is more serious than first feared and will keep him out for a significant part of the season.
According to Diario Sport, the injury was initially picked up back in August by Dr. Ricard Pruna, head of Barça’s medical services. Tests performed at the time found a small meniscus tear in the midfielder’s right knee.
Dr Pruna advised Gavi to go under the knife at the time and have a procedure that it was estimated would have only him kept him out for around five weeks.
However, the club’s physio Raul Martinez disagreed and felt conservative treatment was the best option. The report says his opinion “carries a lot of weight” particularly with the team’s Spanish internationals as he’s also worked with the national team.
Gavi agreeed and so Barcelona went down that path for several weeks. Yet the conservative treatment did not reduce the pain and Gavi ended up going for an arthroscopy anyway.
