Newcastle United have opened initial talks with Sven Botman over a new contract, according to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope.
Hope reported that “Newcastle have begun early discussions with Sven Botman’s camp
over a new contract, but it could be a little while before an agreement is reached.” He added that “relations between new sporting director Ross Wilson and the defender’s representatives are good and, for now, all is relaxed and positive.”
The 25-year-old centre-back has 18 months remaining on his current deal and is understood to be content on Tyneside. Hope wrote that “Botman is happy on Tyneside and initial talks would suggest he is open to a new deal.”
Negotiations are expected to continue gradually as the season progresses, though “nothing is yet imminent or advanced.”
Hope also noted that Botman remains determined to earn his first international call-up.
“The 25-year-old also wants to earn his long-awaited debut for the Netherlands national team,” Hope wrote. “However, Confidential understands that will not come when Ronald Koeman names his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Poland and Lithuania on Friday.”
Despite strong performances for Newcastle, Botman faces “stiff competition” for a place in Koeman’s back line.
Hope reported that “even though Botman is doing all he can at club level, Koeman is sticking with those already in possession of the jerseys.”
