By now, we all know the routine.
Just about every year, the NFL picks a couple of German cities, sends over (typically) mediocre teams, who engage in error-filled, boring games that people in the United States forget are even on television.
That is all part of circus that is growing the brand for the NFL.
However, there is a fallout from that — the stadium grass gets completely destroyed. In addition, the German teams using those stadiums as home fields have to deal with a shoddy replacement turf, which
sometimes sticks and other times….not so much.
So…get ready for more Bayern Munich fans!
According to a report from RTL and ntv Nachrichten (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), the NFL is coming back to the Allianz Arena in both 2026 and 2028:
🏈 The NFL will be back in Munich. The Allianz Arena will host the ‘NFL Germany’ game of 2026 and 2028, while 2027 and 2029 will be played in Berlin. The teams have not been announced yet
Undoubtedly, there are financial incentives to host an NFL game, but there is also the headache of the inevitable grass replacement — and whether or not the new sod actually works out (not always a certainty).
BFW Commentary
Maybe we are being to pessimistic.
Maybe — just maybe — there is a contingent of fans in Germany clamoring to see the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans (or two other horrific NFL teams) come together to work their magic in a soccer stadium (you have to go full American here if you are hosting an NFL game).
Maybe the only truly disappointing thing is that the NFL will not be shipping over some 49ers and Raiders fans to throw the ceremonial first punch in the mezzanine.
