Newcastle United have waved the white flag on Yoanne Wissa’s current or future success at the club.
As expected, but now officially confirmed, the Magpies are already planning to sell Wissa this summer, less than a year after ponying up a huge £55million for the striker—the 16th-highest figure paid this season for an incoming transfer in the Premier League.
Wissa was brought in late in the window after Newcastle failed to secure several primary targets, arrived injured, figuratively never played, and
did pretty much nothing for the club other than warming the pine and the rehab room.
The Athletic was first to report Newcastle’s approach, revealing the Magpies will explore selling the 29-year-old this summer, despite him being on a long-term contract and keen to remain at St James’ Park.
Wissa has made just 24 appearances in the black and white stripes and will leave the club without reaching the 30-game mark across all competitions if all goes to plan.
According to the report, Newcastle have admitted their whiff and are now willing to accept a financial loss on the deal as they look to reshape their attack this summer, with the Magpies focusing on the addition of a new striker.
“Newcastle United will explore selling Yoane Wissa in the summer, less than a year after signing him for a fee rising to £55million,” The Athletic reported.
Let’s hope they don’t fall for it twice—not counting Nick Woltemade.
